The question of how physical systems like brains give rise to the subjective experience of consciousness has long been a conundrum, famously dubbed the 'Hard Problem' by philosopher David Chalmers. But a growing body of research suggests that consciousness may not be exclusive to complex organisms with brains, and this has profound implications for our understanding of the mind.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this emerging field is the exploration of consciousness in organisms without brains. Traditionally, we've assumed that consciousness requires a human or animal brain, but this assumption is now being questioned. The author and philosopher Natalie Lawrence argues that this preconception is the biggest obstacle to understanding the mind. Our tools for investigating cognition, she notes, were built in our own image, leading us to over-attribute 'life' to AI while dismissing complex organisms like slime molds.
The MINT Lab in Spain is at the forefront of this shift, designing experiments that don't use human cognition as the template. Their goal is to build a framework rigorous enough to distinguish a system that merely reacts to its past from one that genuinely experiences its present. This approach is crucial in moving beyond the biases inherent in our current understanding of consciousness.
The concept of what a mind can be is broadening, and researchers are revealing capacities in organisms very different from us and our vertebrate relatives. From maze solving in slime molds to responsivity to anesthetics in plants, these findings hint at minds beyond traditional confines. By studying these diverse systems, we're beginning to understand that consciousness may not be confined to the kind of carbon-based life with which we are familiar.
This expanding view of mind challenges our biological assumptions. František Baluška and Arthur Reber, for instance, argue that to be alive might be to possess some level of sentience. Like intelligence, individual subjective experience probably exists across the tree of life. Each organism inhabits a unique and complex world, and a highly adapted mind is an enormous advantage for survival. However, even this broader view of sentience has been critiqued for its exclusivity. The assumption that mind is confined to the kind of carbon-based life with which we are familiar is a limitation. But this does not entail that other forms of life do not exist and could not be sentient. Or, even, that only biologically organized systems can be sentient.
In my opinion, the key to understanding consciousness lies in removing ourselves from the picture entirely. By studying organisms very different from us, we can gain a more nuanced understanding of the mind. This approach challenges our biases and assumptions, and it's through this process of questioning and exploration that we may finally begin to unravel the mysteries of consciousness.
